<image:title>DogBed - Research</image:title>
<image:caption>Over several months of desk and field research, speaking with users, dogs, an animal behaviorist, as well as working with a university scanning electron microscope, I identified key insights and design principles that shaped the requirements needed for the perfect sleep environment.</image:caption>

<image:title>DogBed - Design</image:title>
<image:caption>Wild dogs seek protected places to sleep, usually up against a wall of trees. A bolstered bed provides a raised perimeter providing a safe and secure place for a dog to tuck into. Since most dog beds look ragged after minimal use, I developed a multi-zippered concept that allows the outer cover to be easily removed for machine washing. Shaped foam inserts provide a durable and tailored look that provide physical comfort to dogs and visual comfort to their owners.</image:caption>

<image:title>WaveMattress - Concept Development</image:title>
<image:caption>A mattress can be a difficult object to design as it has to sell itself on looks, which are soon covered by sheeting. Ergonomic and thermal comfort play an enormous role during a decade of use. Thousands of ideas were rapidly sketched and discussed. Concept design direction focused around a very clean and unembellished look, while introducing subtle visual cues of performance and comfort.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Subtle color gradation makes the mattress visually disappear. No seams to disrupt the eyes or body during sleep. Floating from the future. Rx Blending athleisure, performance, and well-being. Soft and feminine material qualities combined with an open & airy look.</image:caption>

<image:title>WaveMattress - Design Development</image:title>
<image:caption>As a flagship product, material technology and innovation was key in creating a premium mattress. An aggressive calendar and multiple development partners were engaged in a 6 month sprint to get to launch. Hundreds of prototypes were sampled, tested, burned, ultrasonically welded, sewn, slept on, compressed, and stuffed into boxes over the course of development.</image:caption>

<image:title>WaveMattress - Engineered knit</image:title>
<image:caption>The Wave mattress cover is a double-faced knit using some of the largest knitting machines in the world. Every stitch can be computer controlled yielding an effective design canvas of approximately 3800 x 2400 pixels/stitches. Making use of existing colored yarns, combined with a custom developed merino wool/polyester yarn, the finished wave fabric has an amazing hand feel, stretch, and thermal regulating properties.</image:caption>

<image:title>WaveMattress - Testing & more testing</image:title>
<image:caption>Wherever possible, we used calibrated testing equipment to quantify what our bodies were feeling (or wanted to feel). The engineering and design team spent countless hours interpreting data, which then informed the next sample builds. Working with a lab in Belgium, we developed a unique testing protocol to capture dynamic temperature and humidity data. Combining some novel materials and processes allowed us to improve thermal performance by 12%.</image:caption>

<image:title>WaveMattress - Expertise in foam</image:title>
<image:caption>We sampled many variations of foam pouring, cutting, and combining of layers to provide immediately recognizable comfort as well as ergonomic support for while you lounge and sleep in bed. The team developed a nuanced sensitivity to various types of foam and stack-ups. We laid on a lot of foam and had some very interesting conversations about feel.</image:caption>

Working closely with a large engineering team, we developed several (now patented) methods for hiding the paths of technology, from tabletop to floor. Inside the metal leg, a nearly invisible channel exists to host and route any power/video/data needs.</image:caption>

<image:title>M2RACER - The 2 m’s</image:title>
<image:caption>The story of M2RACER begins with me (designer) and my Dad (engineer). We would often go on rides and spitball all sorts of ideas as the miles passed. On one particular ride, we discussed the idea of axial float for a clip-less bicycle pedal. That sparked the exploration of many subsequent sketches, prototypes, phone calls, and ultimately to the formation of the company that manufactured and sold the idea around the world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nearly all pedals have 2 sides, the ORB pedals have infinite sides, allowing you to clip-in at any position. A wedge shaped cleat spreads two pedal halves open. Once the head of the cleat clears the pedal halves, the internal compression springs clamp the pedal halves closed. A simple 15 degree twist of the rider’s foot releases the cleat from the pedal.</image:caption>

<image:title>M2RACER - Lightest bike in the world</image:title>
<image:caption>Every October, M2RACER would showcase their products at Interbike, the national trade show dedicated to bicycles. Our “Light Bike”, for multiple years, was the lightest 14-speed bike in the world, and triggered lots of conversation among our retail and wholesale customers.</image:caption>

<image:title>M2RACER - Fail to learn</image:title>
<image:caption>M2RACER operated under the tightest of tolerances and intentionally brought designs to failure in order to understand where to add more material mass. A diverse test rider group was established early on during development which provided valuable information. M2RACER products were vigorously tested in the field & in the lab. Operating at the fringes of racing, our products competed in 350 mile Alaska backcountry races (Iditarod Trail Invitational) as well as ridden by a Tour de France stage winner climbing Mt. Washington, where weight is a key to winning.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lagunitas - Early prototypes</image:title>
<image:caption>Lagunitas was building on three core experiences; Perceived Privacy in an open landscape, Work & Lounge Postures, and Lower Seat & Table Height to encourage more social interactions. One of the first exercises the team conducted was building very rough 1:1 scale prototypes to quickly validate these leading user experiences.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lagunitas - Simplicity vs. Complexity</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the key needs for systems based furniture is the balance between, enough parts to allow for flexibility, versus too many parts that burden design and development. I conducted repeated studies to ensure that the system was both lean and robust at the same time. This lego kit approach allowed Lagunitas to be configured in an infinite number of applications while enabling the team to meet an on-time launch.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lagunitas - 3D Knit</image:title>

<image:title>Lagunitas - Table Development</image:title>

<image:title>Knockdown Bike - 26”x26”x10”</image:title>
<image:caption>These 3 dimensions, added together equal 62”, the checked baggage total linear length limit. Anything greater carries significant oversize charges ($$$). The pictured suitcase is exactly these dimensions as well. Fitting a full sized bicycle into this suitcase would allow for serious cyclists to travel without compromise.</image:caption>

<image:title>Knockdown Bike - Inspiration</image:title>
<image:caption>The patented frame joint was inspired by coffee. An espresso portafilter locks into place with a bayonette style twist lock. This seemed like an ideal tool-less method to quickly join a bike frame together.</image:caption>

<image:title>Knockdown Bike - Early Prototyping</image:title>
<image:caption>The joint would be employed at 3 key parts of a double-diamond bike frame, allowing for minimal technical knowledge to both assemble and disassemble the bike. Initial 3D prints looked promising for both strength and use-ability.</image:caption>

<image:title>Knockdown Bike - Titanium Build 1.0</image:title>
<image:caption>It works! The first rideable prototype was a success. It cleanly and easily fit into the suitcase and was fairly easy to assemble/disassemble. Many details were learned at this stage which informed the next build.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Dog Bed - Research.</image:title>
<image:caption>Over several months of desk and field research, speaking with users, dogs, an animal behaviorist, as well as working with a university scanning electron microscope, I identified key insights and design principles that shaped the requirements needed for the perfect sleep environment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Dog Bed - Design.</image:title>
<image:caption>Wild dogs seek protected places to sleep, usually up against a wall of trees. A bolstered bed provides a raised perimeter providing a safe and secure place for a dog to tuck into. Since most dog beds look ragged after minimal use, I developed a multi-zippered concept that allows the outer cover to be easily removed for machine washing. Shaped foam inserts provide a durable and tailored look that provide physical comfort to dogs and visual comfort to their owners.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Wave Mattress - Concept Development.</image:title>
<image:caption>A mattress can be a difficult object to design as it has to sell itself on looks, which are soon covered by sheeting. Ergonomic and thermal comfort play an enormous role during a decade of use. Thousands of ideas were rapidly sketched and discussed. Concept design direction focused around a very clean and unembellished look, while introducing subtle visual cues of performance and comfort.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Wave Mattress - Seamless</image:title>
<image:caption>Subtle color gradation makes the mattress visually disappear. No seams to disrupt the eyes or body during sleep. Floating from the future. Rx Blending athleisure, performance, and well-being. Soft and feminine material qualities combined with an open & airy look/feel</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Wave Mattress - Design Development.</image:title>
<image:caption>As a flagship product, material technology and innovation was key in creating a premium mattress. An aggressive calendar and multiple development partners were engaged in a 6 month sprint to get to launch. Hundreds of prototypes were sampled, tested, burned, ultrasonically welded, sewn, slept on, compressed, and stuffed into boxes over the course of development.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Wave Mattress - Engineered Knit.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Wave mattress cover is a double-faced knit using some of the largest knitting machines in the world. Every stitch can be computer controlled yielding an effective design canvas of approximately 3800 x 2400 pixels/stitches. Making use of existing colored yarns, combined with a custom developed merino wool/polyester yarn, the finished wave fabric has an amazing hand feel, stretch, and thermal regulating properties.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Wave Mattress - Testing and more testing.</image:title>
<image:caption>Wherever possible, we used calibrated testing equipment to quantify what our bodies were feeling (or wanted to feel). The engineering and design team spent countless hours interpreting data, which then informed the next sample builds. Working with a lab in Belgium, we developed a unique testing protocol to capture dynamic temperature and humidity data. Combining some novel materials and processes allowed us to improve thermal performance by 12%.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Wave Mattress - Expertise in foam.</image:title>
<image:caption>We sampled many variations of foam pouring, cutting, and combining of layers to provide immediately recognizable comfort as well as ergonomic support for while you lounge and sleep in bed. The team developed a nuanced sensitivity to various types of foam and stack-ups. We laid on a lot of foam and had some very interesting conversations about feel.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Lagunitas - Simplicity vs.

<image:title>Work - 415 Tables - Hidden Technology</image:title>
<image:caption>Most technology enabled furniture screams, “technology”, and usually in an ugly way. I believe technology should present itself when needed, and disappear when not. Working closely with a large engineering team, we developed several (now patented) methods for hiding the paths of technology, from tabletop to floor. Inside the metal leg, a nearly invisible channel exists to host and route any power/video/data needs.</image:caption>

On one particular ride, we discussed the idea of axial float for a clip-less bicycle pedal. That sparked the exploration of many subsequent sketches, prototypes, phone calls, and ultimately to the formation of the company that manufactured and sold the idea around the world.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - M2RACER - Fail to learn.</image:title>
<image:caption>M2RACER operated under the tightest of tolerances and intentionally brought designs to failure in order to understand where to add more material mass. A diverse test rider group was established early on during development which provided valuable information. M2RACER products were vigorously tested in the field & in the lab. Operating at the fringes of racing, our products competed in 350 mile Alaska backcountry races (Iditarod Trail Invitational) as well as ridden by a Tour de France stage winner climbing Mt. Washington, where weight is a key to winning.</image:caption>
