Casper, CMF
Strategy, Design, & Development
Working closely with Beatrice Santiccioli Design, I led a strategic project to develop a CMF system for Casper’s growing product portfolio and design team. This entailed CMF principles, an associated physical library, and custom material development.
Balance
Sleep is universal and encompasses unique tensions for design. Our minds have an emotional connection to sleep while our bodies have a physical connection. There is a need to both separate and integrate these opposing directions.
Emotion
Color is a fundamental aspect of our lives. We see in color, and whether conscience or sub-conscience, the colors around us evoke strong emotions.
The Casper color palette has been carefully selected to evoke very specific emotions and feelings mapped to the arc of sleep, from going to bed to waking up. The emotive qualities of color can help reinforce design intent for a given product or experience.
Neutral Foundation
The foundation of the Casper color palette begins with neutrals. It captures the qualities of the brand that customers are familiar with, reassuring and efficient. These neutrals express product performance but also communicate inviting, comfortable and sophisticated characteristics. They are like a fundamental article of clothing in a wardrobe, a basic t-shirt or pair of pants.

Calm
The transition from day to night is significant. Slowing down, putting down our devices and to do lists. Calm the business of our lives and bring well being into our home lives.

Comfort
The day has melted away, we have been well fed and it’s time to bring closure to the day. Cuddle up, get cozy, feel secure. The warm comfort palette reminds us of staring into a fire or a captivating sunset.

Dream
From conscious to unconscious, we fall asleep. A foreign and alien part of our brain kicks into action. Chaotic and playful processes and imagery emerge. Dreams can be fun, poetic, joyful, and deeply mysterious. A reminder of how little we truly know about sleep.

Rejuvenation
The sun rises and gentle light filters through. The dream world fades as the power of color and light energizes the beginning of another day. We have reset and have been refreshed while still holding on to a positive and lasting memory of how great a night of sleep feels.

Material & Color Receptiveness
Casper works across a wide variety of materials and product categories. Some materials/products are more conducive to telling a color story.

Upholstery Fabric
The CMF principles and palette were adopted across the entire product portfolio as well as applied to new material development. The shown upholstery fabric was designed and developed from the yarn level and launched with Casper’s Upholstered Bed Frame.

Stained Oak
Working with a master wood finisher, the CMF palette was applied to Quarter-Sawn White Oak, slated for launch with an upcoming Casper bed frame.
